Durametric use

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but it's really frustrating.
I have an engine with some codes, and not running very well. In trying to diagnose, it quits. Then, the program locks up since you must turn the key off to restart. It doesn't restart until I restart the laptop.
Is there a way out of this?

turn the key to the on position, hook up computer, read codes. car doesn't have to be running to read the codes.

Also make sure you are running the latest version of durametric. Uninstall the old version before installing the new one.

Latest version.
Trying to check different parameters. Trying not to restart it too much as sounds horrible.
