4min - says so right on the package ;)

Good luck :)

It's been a while but I haven't had much to report. I sent my trans to CMS in AZ to be freshened up back in July - 2nd gear synchro retrofit for $2500. A mo or so later I got an email with the damage.

A day or two later I got another batch of pics. Not good news.

The pinion was a bit snaggle-toothed. Oh, oh, the cash register just rang up another $2600.

A while later I get another email with some pics I didn't understand but a desc that I did: the 3rd & 4th gear synchros were on their last legs. Another $2K for those. By now I'm only $1K from a factory reman. Roger from CMS says it will take 3 wks to get a reman from Germany. I'm not overjoyed with the thought of spending $8K when I was budgeting for $2500, but it was the right decision to OK the reman. 5 wks go by and I don't hear anything, so I contact Roger. A wk later he says the trans is in CA and will be shipped to OMA after I pay my bill. I have the option of electronic check or credit card with a 3% penalty. I choose the former. I get busy and a wk goes by. I don't get any paperwork saying I've paid or a tracking #. When I contact Roger, he says the trans may still be in CA (supply chain issue?) but he's confident it will be delivered. Get busy again and 2 wks go by. Contact Roger again via email and text. No reply. I'm getting concerned. Call on Fri, get voice mail. Later he calls back and says the trans was delivered to SLM on the 19th. I hadn't heard from SLM that it was. Of course SLM was closed by then and not open on Sat. A friend said Alex at SLM will sometimes answer emails on Sat, so I fired one off asking if the trans had arrived. He said YES! Whew. Just several miscommunications all around. I stopped down today at SLM and yes, it is here.

What a nice looking piece of equipment. But for $8K it should look nice.

A couple wks earlier I got an email from Alex about my engine at EVO Spec. Alex had been trying several times to contact them about a status but wasn't hearing back from them. Then he received an email from John stating that he (John) had been sick and out for almost a mo. He was now back at the shop. He was sure my engine halves were back from L&N so it was a matter of putting the engine back together. I imagine John has a crapload of work to do, but if all goes well, I might have my engine back in the next 4-6 wks. Which means I could be driving her by year end. Fingers crossed.

That transmission is beautiful! Hope it all goes back together smoothly and you are breaking it in soon!

Had been hoping my engine would be arriving in OMA around the first of this mo. Hadn't heard anything from SLM. Decided late last wk to just send an email to EvoSpec and see if they had an est on a ship date. Didn't hear anything. I was in the neighborhood so I stopped in to SLM yesterday on the off chance they had heard something. Alex said he'd received an email from John around Dec 1 saying the engine was nearing completion and might be ready in another two wks. So if everything is on schedule, it should be nearing completion and ready to ship shortly.

Getting anxious.

Good news! Hopefully you'll be driving it soon.

husker boxster 01-25-2022 04:42 PM

Well Dec turned into Jan and no pkg from AZ.

A friend from our local Porsche club snowbirds in AZ, so he volunteered to head over to EvoSpec to recon my engine. He found...

Bottom box is the engine, top box is parts (hopefully not left over parts). Looking to ship on Fri.

We'll see...

PaulE 01-26-2022 02:18 PM

Great news! You'll be back on the track soon!

husker boxster 04-01-2022 04:55 AM

Tracking Number!

Jan turned into Mar, still no engine. Various stories as to why.

2 wks ago told it would be shipped on Mar 27. Was excited until I looked at the calendar and the 27th was a Sunday. Joked with Alex at SLM about the over / under odds on shipping on a Sun. The 27th came and went without a tracking number. Alex said to wait until Wed (he may have corresponded with Evo and they now told him Wed), but John sent an IM to Alex on Wed and said it was being shipped and a tracking number would be coming. Exciting, but...

Late yesterday the tracking number arrived. Punching the number shows...

Just so happens to arrive on my birthday. Happy birthday to me! Alex already has my car pulled out of the warehouse and is prepared to assemble as soon as the engine arrives. We've worked on the 'while you're in theres' and have them ready to go too. Alex thought it would be 2 wks to have her running. Can't wait for the dyno session to see what she has.

This is NOT an April fools joke. (I hope)

PaulE 04-01-2022 07:46 AM

It's going to be worth the wait. Take your time to do the recommended break-in!

husker boxster 04-05-2022 04:05 PM

Look what arrived this afternoon! Even a day early.

Will get together with Alex tomorrow to see what the timelines are.

As much as I wanted to tear the wrapping off, I resisted. Alex was super busy and I didn't want to be a pest.

But here it is today!

The plan is to clean the ancillaries before putting them back on, then reassemble. Once it's back in the car, the dyno will be used for break-in. Using Driven Break-In oil, they'll do several runs - one in the 2K rpm range, check / change oil filter, another run at 3K rpm, check / change oil filter, etc until they've run it through all the ranges. Then change oil and she's ready to go.

Making progress. If all goes well on Mon, Tue will be dyno break-in.

That is the shiniest transaxle I've ever seen!

Btw, you're not gonna make that beast breathe through a stock exhaust system are you?

It should be shiny, it's brand new. To the tune of $8K!

Yep. It would be hard to improve the exhaust manifold design, plus they want a crapton of $$$ for headers. Don't want to deal with cels by going to 200 cel cats. AND I have PSE. She'll breathe the way the good DR intended.

ike84 05-07-2022 05:35 AM

If you're gonna break it in on a Dyno, will you please humor me and test out a catless or high flow cat system? Also, I don't know what intake you're using but anything smaller than 82mm would be a mistake I think

Here's why I say this -

When I redid my 2.7l with a short ram 82mm intake, high flow headers and shorty glass packs, and run on oem 996 row fuel maps, my LTFTs are -17% (with afrs of 14.7 cruising and 11-12 wot). I've never dynoed my car but if the fuel consumption is linear to power output, that means that my car is now making 245 hp. I can almost guarantee that using the stock intake and exhaust will rob you of a significant amount of power output.

That system just wasn't designed to breathe - it was designed to meet stringent exhaust and nose control regulations (especially in the eu). If you look at recommendations for exhaust tubing size based on HP, the 986 system is undersized even for the 207 hp mark. You're probably looking to produce 300-350 hp right? You should have a 2.5" dual exhaust system for a 3.8l displacement. In terms of intake, depending on your gearing and again assuming 3.8l with 85% ve and 7200rpm redline, you need a 4.25" intake to completely eliminate all resistance (this isn't factoring bends and recessive length).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to criticize, I'm just wanting to relay my experience. A really simple test would be the following - after break in, do a Dyno wot pull and calculate power outputs. After that, disconnect the intake and hook up your maf to an 82mm housing and nothing else. Disconnect your exhaust and put on only a pair of cheap eBay catless headers with your precats nbo2 sensors installed. Run for a bit like this again on the dyno to allow to ecu to recalibrate to your changes and then repeat your wot pulls
