Also, that exhaust setup is going to look and sound MEAN.

Random thought; is yours still registered for road use? This will be the most fun errand runner ever.

I need to figure out a way to get some cold air in there, although its a track car so it'll probably be getting plenty of cold air at 100mph+ just with the openings.

It is actual registered and insured for the street but hasn't been on the street in a long time. It attracts way to much attention for me. Next year itll be 25 years old and registerable as classic in VA so that allow me to bypass the state inspection which it of course would not pass.

I made some progress on the trunk yesterday, I'm really excited about how this is turning out. The factory humps in the trunk really line up perfectly with the turbos which was super lucky. I can't wait to see it all together with the exhaust.

OK one more photo because I'm just so pumped about how this is turning out. And yes it'll be wrapped like the rest of the car http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1615295728.jpg

Oil cooler and after cooler? Thank you for sharing with us this awesome story :-)

DarrenD 03-15-2021 06:38 AM

What a phenomenal build this car is! Man I wish you were my next door neighbour...

paulofto 03-15-2021 07:21 AM

Wow. How much oil is this going to need? The plumbing looks amazing.

Thanks for the kind words guys! That photo is actual of the engine oil cooler and the transmission cooler.

I have no idea... I can probably do some math and get close

truegearhead 04-19-2021 09:14 AM

The fender intercoolers are done, definitely more work than I anticipated and I still have some metal clean up work but its all plumbed up and looks like it'll work.

FYI, I bought the same radiator as the one you're using in the frunk and was very pleased with the build quality for how cheap it was. The only problem with it is the pressure valve on the cap is too weak. It will release pressure around 190 and continues to drip even when the car is cold. I'm going to weld it closed as it's not needed for my situation. I also plan on installing a radiator hose with a cap built into it at a high point in the system to help relieve air pockets.

truegearhead 04-28-2021 08:56 AM

I have a major setback, I rotated the engine before I bolted the transmission up but now with everything assembled it won't rotate....ugh. I'm going to pull the transmission off tonight and see what the deal is. Did any of you guys swapping Audi V8s have a similar problem?

78F350 04-28-2021 10:19 AM

When I first mated an AUX (40 valve) with a Boxster 5-speed transmission I had that exact problem. It required a small spacer between the engine and transmission to provide enough clearance for the flywheel/clutch.
It's been a few years, but I had these links bookmarked:
https://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/766013-Audi-Engine-To-Transmission-Spacers-Function-When-Are-They-Needed
https://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/508044-V8-Models-What-Flywheel-And-Clutch-Combo-Are-You-Running/page2?

78F350 04-28-2021 10:30 AM

If the spacer is the issue, you might be able to fabricate one based of the bell housing and specific clearance you need. Here's what I just found on eBay, but not sure of the thickness...

Thanks again you are the man! I followed your advice and bought that very one. It seems like its going to fix the problem, I'll know tomorrow.

It’s off the jack stands, it’s off the jack stands! As it sits it’s 17”s wider than stock😬

The Boxster also picked up a new stable mate...can you tell what it is?

Yep, 1990 Lotus Esprit SE Turbo. It runs and drives, no real problems. I sold my 911 and bought it last week. Its a hoot to drive at any speed, I never considered these as mini-super cars but the year this was made (1989) it was faster to 60 than a Countach..also the exact same width and 6's longer than the lambo. Whether or not its 90s supercar territory it definitely scratched the itch for me.

Now the engine is running I can work on some fun things. I got the dash/gauges working this week. It looks absolutely wild in person. Super happy the way it turned out. Definitely a racecar finish though, not up to street car quality but still cool.

The exhaust is finally done. The trunk is almost done (besides wrapping) and the new rear wing has been sent off to the water jet to be made. It’s coming together.

https://s3.us-east-2.amazonaws.com/p...5_mmthumb.jpeg

The wing is going to be a 70s IMSA style wing supported from the sides. I love the 70s IMSA cars and I don’t car if tech has improved, it’s just too cool not to do.

thanks! I have not driven it yet, I live in the city and it certainly not street legal so the first time I'll drive it will be on the track...which is terrifying. It will go to the dyno before the track so thats a bit of a trial run

truegearhead 09-16-2021 11:27 AM

The throw-back IMSA wing is done! I’m super happy with it, the wing blade is off of a 911 Cup car that just happened to be the right length. I still need to cut the center attachment points off

Not yet…two weeks until the first event. Still a long way to go.

Not too much of an update but the car is finally fully assembled, its so good to see it back together. What a LOOONNGG road its been.

BUMP - did you ever get to drive this beast? Report back to your internet fans :)

truegearhead 02-06-2022 03:41 PM

Whew its been awhile but I finally got it out to a test and tune (AKA: drift event).
I went out to take it easy, being the first time I've driven the car with this engine, the limited tune, the unproven suspension etc etc but as always the red mist took over and it wasn't long before I was chasing drift cars and spinning it off into the gravel. It was 30 degrees and the Hoosiers were rock cold but the wow is this thing scary powerful. I can't wait to get it out on a real track.

A buddy of mine made a quick video of the run.

How did the tranny handle? You still have the stock 5 speed in place right?

Yep still the stock 5 speed. It really didn’t take a beating though, it was 30 degrees out, I was running Hoosiers (which could not warm up) and the diff is open. So it just spun one wheel the whole time.

ike84 02-08-2022 05:13 PM

Lol, I'm sure you're gonna go through a lot of tires.

Test and tune round 2, this time at VIR. I was super nervous about driving this car at speed. It has so many unknowns, so many back yard engineering solutions I had no idea what to expect. I found an event that only had less than 15 people at theme (5 or so on track at the same time) so I thought it would be the perfect way to test the car out without running anyone else’s day. I had a few buddies come along as well, which you can see in the 11 second long video below. The car did perfectly with the exception of the clutch which you can hear in the video slipping constantly. Even with the slipping clutch is was able to walk away from my buddies 600hp M4.

Can you provide some information on how you mounted it in the car. Also did you try to get the VEMS to communicate with cluster or told that it wouldn't from company?
