996 Carrera 6-speed transmission for a 2000 Boxster S 986

Hi everyone,

I'm working on replacing a 6 speed transmission on the 2000 Boxster S.

I can't find a good one for a good price, but then I've found a good offer for a 996 Carrera 6-speed tranny. I know it goes the other way around and possibly requires the case swap from Boxster to Carrera.

Has anyone ever done this before? What are possible concerns with this?

Thanks in advance!

Hmm,
Out of curiosity, won't you end with one speed going forward and six for reverse..?
.

:D :D :D

Yeah so the tranny needs to be reversed, but the internals should be the same. Since I'm not 100% how that works that's why I'm asking

While they're basically the same transmission, the internals are not the same. I forget what the difference is but I do remember it's huge

I vaguely remember that VW cars and vans had the same problem but the differential ring gear could be reversed (moved from the left side of the output shaft to the right side for example) which reversed the wheel rotation. Perhaps it was for the installation of a Corvair engine that turned in the opposite direction. A bit of useless information that is likely of no import here...

Reverse ring and pinion gives you six in reverse on a 911 or six forward if you're mid engineed.

My buddy just so happens to be putting a Subaru engine in a bug atm and he is doing the same thing with a Subaru trans.

The old Formula V racing class used an air cooled flat 4 VW engine in a mid-engine chassis and the VW transaxle with the ring gear reversed. This was also done on a lot of mid-engine kit cars back in the day. I have no idea if the ring gear can be reversed in a 996 transaxle.
