No Tiptronic manual mode

Working on a 2002 986 with a tip that drives fine in automatic mode. When the shift lever is moved to manual mode, nothing happens. The indicator light on the dash stays in D and the car continues to drive fine. The thumb shifters never work.

There are no flashing lights nor are any transmission codes present.

I suspected the shift lever micro switch, swapped it out, no difference.

Anyone have another idea?

Thanks,
Joe

First thing I would look at is the shifter and switches within. When you flip it to manual, there is a switch telling the tranny you want to tip through the gears.
My tip wouldn’t stay out of manual mode and I swapped out the entire shifter and switches from my 2000, problem resolved.

Also check the connector on the side of the transmission, these get dirty and I didn’t check where the shifter switch signals, but perhaps the problem is there?

Tiptronic manual mode

Just fixed my 2002 Boxster S (112K miles) tiptronic manual non-shifting problem. My ABS dash light had come on at the same time my tip would not go to manual shifting. My indy shop ran the diagnostics and a bad speed sensor was the problem. Replaced it and the manual shift returned and the ABS light was gone. So, don't replaced the $400 converter cable without checking other causes.
