02' 2.7 Boxster Cam locking tool

would it be safe to buy the Pelican cam locking tool for a 02' 2.7 its a 5 chain engine so I thought if I lock the one side I could change my external tensioner's safely correct ?? its a 100.00 tool if memory serves me correctly,..Thanks Frank

I think you would be OK, if you:

Put the engine at TDC for Bank 1, lock bank 1, swap lower rear tensioner.
Put engine at TDC for bank 2, Lock bank2, swap upper front tensioner.

I would say you could swap the IMS tensioner with either side locked, at either TDC.

Don't forget to put new tensioners in a little tray of oil and plunge them in and out till they fill with oil and stiffen up.

I am not an expert, nor do I play one on television, use above advice at your own peril.

regards,

Steve

The slot in the end of the cam is offset. You can see if the cam is 180 degrees off by how the tool lines up with the flange it bolts to. #1 tdc is when the offset is correct and #1 cyl is compressing (need the plug out). I lock both sides. Unnecessary, but It gives me peace of mind. If you need to borrow a lock, let me know with a pm. Or, locking one side is fine. Don't forget to buy 2 cam plugs.

My spare lock I made by using the purchased tool as a pattern. I'm sure you can too. Its just a piece of 1/4 inch sawn out, drilled, and the tang ground offset. Not hard and no special tools needed.

crank pulley has holes for various engine positions. You stick a pin into a boss on the block to lock the crank
