Transmission fitment question

What engines will bolt up to the 986 5 spd? What exact transmission is it? I've been googling it for the past hour and all I could find is that it's an Aisin, but I couldn't confirm that or the specific transmission.

Basically, the 2.7 in my 986 has one foot in the grave, and i'm looking for engine swap options that won't end up costing more than a new M96 and/or require fabricating the whole back half of the car.

Kennedy has an adapter to bolt an LS to both of the Boxster manuals

I think some of the VW/Audi engines use the same bolt pattern also?

After some research, it would seem that the transmission is referred to as the G86/01.

My next question, is the bolt pattern of the G86 the same as the G96 out of the carrera of the same years? It seems like it is, but I want to make sure before committing to anything.

Bolt pattern is the same (same block) but do you want 5 speeds in reverse? :)

Good point!

The reason I'm asking is because I found a site that makes an adapter for the G96 transaxle. Making sure it will bolt to the G86.

bolt pattern is the same. The g86 is not an aisin gearbox, I believe its getrag. VW engines will bolt up if you're looking at a 1.8t swap or Audi V8.

Why is that? Do the motors run in the opposite rotational direction?

no, but if you point it in the other direction, the gears will turn the wheels in the opposite way.

Ah, so the Carrera's engine & tranny are oriented backwards, like a VW Bug?

Kitcarchassis has them as well. I have an LS adapter on order for mine.

I ended up talking to a place called Kennedy Engineering, seems like they do some adapters for Porsche transaxles to various other engines.
