Looking for a running 2.7 (or 3.2 or 3.4) for 2000 base Boxster
 

I would like to find a good 2.7 from a 2000 Boxster****(or a 2001-2 2.7 or a 2000 to 2002 3.2 or 3.4 up to 2001). The plan is to buy a replacement engine and do some maintenance (change cam tensioners, check the IMSB etc.) during the winter then swap it in in the spring and do the same work on my old engine to sell it on. If possible under 100,000 miles.

The more I think about it the more an engine upgrade is the logical step. I have been looking for info on installing a 3.2l (2000 to 2002) to my 2000 and my understanding is it would be a straight swap. I would keep the 5-speed transmission. I would assume that I would have to keep the 2.7's clutch disk to mate to the 5-speed. I have spent some time searching for threads on this and have not found all the answers. Most people switch to the 6-speed which I don't want to do, at least not immediately. For my old-fart driving style I don't see a problem.

If I recall, there is a compatibility issue with the 5-speed and non-2.7 engines.

no sir, 5 speed bolted up just fine to my 3.2

I've got a perfectly good 6-spd trans burning a hole in my garage shelf..... so to speak.
But that said: yes, you're correct. 5-spd clutch disk and you should be good to go.

Thanks for the info on putting a 3.2 into my base boxster. All I need to do now is find an engine. I have seen several on various sites, but they sure are expensive translated into Canadian...

And that 6 speed would lead to a whole new rear end wouldn't it.

The 6 speed uses a different drive shaft. Not sure if you could just swap hubs or if you need a whole new upright.

If I ever do this I would keep the 5 speed... so no problems.

I reviewed the Pelican article on engine swapping and noticed this:
"You can swap in any replacement engine of the same displacement from 2000-02 without having to remap the DME. (I.E. a 2000 2.7L Boxster with a blown motor can accept a 2002 2.7L engine with no remapping needed). Installation of a 3.2 Boxster 'S' engine would be an easy installation, but would require an updated map for the DME."

996 engines have different mounting holes for bolt on accesories, exhaust,etc.

Only the intake mounting is different and even that can be modified easily
