what to do, with a 3.2?
so, this place has been a bit of a yawnfest recently, so time for a theoretical exercise ...
in the process of modifying, upgrading and putting a bigger engine into my car, i've accumulated enough parts to build a boxster race car. while this had been the plan, the local closed wheel racing has taken a nosedive recently and the car counts are just not there anymore (we are running nasa classing and there are like 2 st2, 3 st3, 4 st4 cars ...). so, not really enough competition to justify a build (a lot more cars in open wheel and vintage, and i am currently running a vintage triumph). which leaves me with a really nice 3.2 motor and 5-speed transmission. while i could keep the 3.2 as a spare, the mind does get to thinking ... what could i put it in that isn't another boxster (i already have one of those...)? the 5-speed can handle the hp from the 3.2, is shorter than the 6-speed for a smaller overall package, and has good track gearing. the 3.2 has been built without ac, power steering, emissions, etc. it is hard to find a place to put a flat 6, as they are rather low and wide compared to the other inline and V engine out there. so, two options: diasio. find a diasio (or a saker?) with a tired engine and do the swap. engine should fit as they can take 4 and 6-cyl subi motors, it's a 962 copy so the pedigree is there, and could run with the open wheels as a sport racer, or w the GT cars in SU. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1566345526.jpg air-cooled 911. yeah, i know. whatever. first, need an old 911 without an engine. it's confirmed that the engine will fit (see pic). then need to find out if i can get the transmission to spin the other way. otherwise, put a cable 996 throttle body on it, run a stand-alone ecu, get an rpm signal to the dash, and fabricate a transmission mount and some axles. would need to sort the clutch master/slave. the water-cooling bit has been sorted by the 911 v8 swap guys so no issue there. fuel should not be an issue either. perhaps some stiffening of the suspension for the extra weight. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1566345574.jpg thoughts? other ideas? |
I've always wanted to build a hand-built, purpose built, track toy. Something with pushrod suspension just having in the breeze for everyone to see. Something you - just- fit into.
Then throw turn signals on it and hit the dmv.... Haha. And then Ariel built the atom..... Still would be a fun build. Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk |

I'm considering a coffee table made out of the motor I junked..... but your build sounds like tons more fun. Hahaha Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk |
Here you go, the ultimate use for it, disregarding the lack of a giant cooling fan (but you could fake it!)

yes, they make several sweet cars - a 906 as well i think (ps, going to be vintage racing with a 906 this weekend!!!). big $ and time commitment, though. the cool thing about the diasio is that i can get a running car for $25k and, one would hope, a roller for much less.
anyone know if you can reverse the ring/pinion in a g86 or g86.2 for a rear engine application? |

Sell the engine and get a Formula car. You would not belive how inexpensive one of these is today. I recently had my engine rebuilt in Canada for 1/3 the price of a 3.2 engine rebuild.

so thought about it. there' a big formula continental crowd around here. or, radicals are starting to get popular and a series is starting up. wings n things is a whole different kind of driving though; dunno if i got the programming for it.

Care to share more details (and pics) of your formula car? Thanks! |
the cool thing about putting my 3.2 in a diasio is that there would be enough room for a set of these ...

Been staring at that piece for a loong time.. But seriously, how would one adapt to the lack of MAF? |
except, just talked w a person running a diasio w a subi engine and he had to stretch it 4" (which means revised bodywork, etc. etc. etc.) no no go. perhaps a saker?
https://vintageracecarsales.com/portfolio-view/2004-sakar-gt/ re no maf, you would have to go stand-alone ecu. run an alfa-n tune (goes off throttle position) and vacuum signal for idle (note that the obx unit has a vacuum plenum; would have to adapt a throttle position sensor to the cable throttle linkage) and presume go to wideband 02 sensors, as well as an iat sensor (since no more maf). all the new stand-alone ecus can drive variable valve timing these days. |
