I know that you can use the 3.6 crank on your 3.2, but not 100% sure about the heads,
perhaps BYProdriver can chime on this, as you could end with a killer engine with your 3.2 cylinders bored to 3.8 using the LN Nickies.. :rolleyes:

Originally, I was looking for a 3.2 replacement. Almost all of the available engines of this format are 5 chain (pre 2003) engines. The 3.2 three chain motor appeared in the Boxster in 2003 with the 7.8 DME. It was succeeded by the 3.4 in the Cayman and then in the Boxster.
On the other hand, the same 3 chain motor appeared in 2002 in the Carrera, also using the 7.8 DME. This engine was bored out to 3.6 with better breathing and tuning. This is why I bought the 3.6 which you see in these pictures. Supposedly the core was intact and was therefore a candidate for a rebuild with “Nickies” and all. Ah well, a lesson learned. :ah:

Does anyone know how much D-chunking is too much to be repaired with LN Nickies? In my mind I figured they welded the broken chunks back in to the block before machining everything and inserting the liners. If no one knows for sure it would worth contacting LN to find out. But this picture does look like a Triple D Chunk - 2 sides on one cylinder and one side on another. Sorry for your loss...

This photo shows the bottom of the cylinders not the top. The head is lying top down on the table.

I assumed that that the D chunk failures happen at the bottom of the cylinders (opposite side of the heads).. of course I could be wrong..

Regardless, these cylinder halves are junk :(

Yes, you are right on both counts: the damage happens on the bottom of the cylinder and, this bank is good for aluminum recycling.

There are some relatively low mile used and a couple of rebuilt engines on eBay right now. This one says it is a 987 3.2 factory rebuild for 14,900 or best offer. There are also some 3.6 engines listed.

Man.... I'd JUMP on that one!
