2004 Boxster S Special Edition IMS help

First post here gang, so please go easy on me.
I just purchased a 2004 Boxster S special edition.
I had no mechanical documents, so i assumed the worst and decided to do the IMS myself.
Car has 64,000 miles
I just removed the flywheel and i see this:

All this work, and if im not mistaken, that is an LN badge on that cover.
I have the pelican kit.
What do i do ????

Contact LN and let them know you just purchased a Porsche that looks like it has an LN IMS bearing installed . I assume you have the name of the previous owner you bought it from ? What you are trying to get to is when or what mileage was the bearing installed .

I bought from a Kansas city dealership and they won't disclose former owner.
I did find original purchase location
From porsche Beverly hills California back in 2004.
Thats all i have

Is there an LN Engineering sticker like this on the door jamb, under the rear trunk or in the engine compartment?http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1544401166.jpg

Negative on the badges.
I checked that before disassembling.
Quite disappointing, but it is what it is.

Try this: Does my car have it already? – IMS Retrofit

If it was done properly by a shop, it should have been registered. Not all cars with the LN bearing are registered though.

Opposite the LN engraving on the cover has a large K-3 stamp.
Not sure what that means

Did you phone L&N? You didn't say. Perhaps they can check with the VIN. Maybe you can ask the dealer if they can reveal the city in which the former owner lived. Maybe you can see if L&N will be generous enough to run a query to see if they installed that part for a client out of "insert city here". Maybe it won't be a city where 10K Porsches had L&N install the part.. if you know what I mean.

I plan on calling l and N tomorrow during business hours.
The lookup site didnt reveal a match with the VIN.
I was thinking about just buying the LN retrofit kit for 800$ us, but it requires a tool that costs just as much, which is completely ridiculous in my opinion.
I have the LN pro kit already, but the new retro fit kit for the single row bearing requires a sleeve to compress a ring

If you want to do the LN IMSB install, ask LN if they will loan or rent you the special tools. They often come up for sale second hand too. Be sure to follow all the instructions to the T. There are lots of stories of failed IMSB replacements due to shortcuts or not following all the directions.

Hi gang-
LN couldn't offer up much help other than asking why I wanted to remove an L&N :)
I have 65k miles on the car and no information on the LN bearing. I have a new Pelican bearing in-hand and a new factory deep dish IMS cover. What to do ?
Also, the RMS is not leaking (see picture). Change that or leave it ?

If it were me, I'd leave it alone. Return the pelican unit for credit. Leave the IMS and RMS as they are.

I have to agree, I believe wholeheartedly in this approach.

Thanks-
I'm torn at the unknown, and I have everything ready to do both.
Not exactly the position I wanted to be in.
I should have the title in-hand tonight, and it should have the previous owner on it. I will try to find that person

I am surpised that LN implied that the bearing should never be replaced. I thought outside of the ‘Solution’ they should be changed with the clutch.

If you could confirm the RMS is the updated seal, I would leave it. If not, I would change it.

BTW- Do you have some Cam Locking tools in your possession? I am a little confused as to what tools you were going to use to swap out the bearing and cover.

Hello-
I called L&N back as I wanted to find out what the K-3 stamp meant and it sounds like it is a stock date for inventory tracking from 2013.
If this is indeed a bearing from 2013 and installed then, it is out of L&N coverage and should be replaced.
The gentleman told me that the older style L&N was covered for only 30 days.

I have the IMS Pro tool set with the cam locking tools, yes.
I understand the steps with setting TDC, locking flywheel, locking banks 1-3 cams and pulling 2 of the tensioner bolts (1-3 bank and the IMS).
I plan on then to also use 2 of the set screws (maybe) to lock the IMS sprocket itself as extra insurance.
Sounds as if when the engine is TDC, the sprocket holes line up with one of the flange bolt holes, so you can’t use all 3.

SO I finally got around to replacing the air filter and guess what.....ORIGINAL
Countless Porsche service line items since 2005 and the air filter was never changed.
65,000 miles.
It was horrible looking, and even had a 2004 date stamp on it.
Update* cabin filter too
dealership confidence into toilet..
