My 2000 starts up rough and backfires now some white smoke
My 2000 986 starts up rough and backfires for about 60 seconds then runs fine. Not today but last 2 times ive started it a cloud of white smoke comes out when first starting it. My guess is both these issues are the air oil separator. Anyone have any idea what the issue is?

White or blue smoke --sometimes it's hard to tell difference.
If this is repeatable -- I would pull the spark plugs after sitting and take a swab of what's in the cylinder. This could be AOS, or it could be a cracked cylinder liner leaking coolant. m |
Its white. I started it today and drove it to work and no smoke at all. The plugs are new like a few hundred miles on them. The old ones were warn but not bad.
|
Check the anti-freeze level and color, also the oil level and color. For intermix. Inspect the plugs to see if one is a different color than the others. No matter how new.
Does this occur after you started the car, drove a few feet and then stopped the car. Then the next time you start it it happens? |
Also check oil level. AOS being overwhelmed can come from overfilling oil.
|
A failed AOS will give white smoke on start up, then clear when running. It'll also give bad running as this can cause a vacuum leak.
Good way to test it - with the engine running, see if you can remove the oil cap with little to no effort. If you can't budge your oil cap with the engine running, your AOS is bad as it's causing a huge vacuum. |
It was harder to take off im going to order it. Does anyone know what the porsche part number is for a 2000 2.7. Ive seen a few different part numbers for them.

I had the same scare a couple months back. CEL, white smoke, shaky rpm's. Here is the part I used, mine is an 01 2.7. 996-107-023-04-M100 https://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/pel_search_2016.cgi?command=show_part_page&make=PO R&model=1047§ion=engoil&page=7&bookmark=20&par t_number=996-107-023-04-M100 First one on the page. I also recommend getting this hose 996-107-146-00-M100 (just a bit further down on the same page) for $29, you might not need it but mine cracked and I had to tape it together until the new one arrived. It's also a great time to check and clean your MAF. |
Yea I just had the air oil separator replaced today and it was bad. I did buy that part from pelican part.
