Fuel guage reading empty when full

Not sure what happened. It's worked fine since I've gotten the car. I was driving the other day and it got low enough that the fuel light came on, stopped to fill it this morning and it's still reading empty with the light on.
I've done a search but can't find much on my problem. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Sounds like the float on the sending unit is stuck. That, or the sending unit has failed.
