Dyno Results - Bone Stock 130k Mile 986S

I took my car to the dyno today to see what it's puts down before the... upgrades... I am planning over winter take place. It's a 2003 Boxster S, 206,000kms on it, fresh air filter, fresh oil, original cats, original muffler, etc.

Prior to the visit I had done some research and found videos on YouTube where an identical car with only 20,000km put down 229whp. I was going to be happy if my car cracked 215whp, considering the mileage.

The first run was the best of three, and resulted in 227whp. So I was pleasantly surprised!

Here is the dyno plot:

All runs were done in 4th gear (in case that wasn't obvious). It was an inertia dyno, and I believe it was a Dyno-jet.

Here is a video of the second run:

And yes, that is one of the guys in the shop asking "is this water-cooled or air-cooled" at the beginning of the video. They're primarily a V8 shop - and really nice guys anyways :).

Nice...what mods are planned?

Two more cylinders and 1L more displacement.

Oh to live is SmogTest-free world.

It'll be expensive to squeeze every hp more than factory

Hmmm... Does that qualify as a “mod”?

there are huge HP gains to be unlocked with the correct intake and exhaust mods. You should be able to realize a 40hp gain for around $1000. I don't think that's TOO expensive.

I agree I have seen some posts that say there are gains to be made w/intake and exhaust. It would be great for someone that has done these to post a DIY with parts etc to get these gains. I would love to do this but the info is scattered.

Check out Ben006 thread on the DIY forum entitled "Intake Plenum and 911 Throttle Body". I just installed it and WOW what a difference. Best performance mod I have ever made.

Fabspeed asserts headers complete exhaust (22hp) for $3900 and IDP plenum (15 hp) for $900.00

for a total of a little over $4K you can gain a little under 40 hp from upgrading the intake/exhaust

Gives you some idea what to expect from different mods.

i think there is no definitive list as the options vary with where you live (emissions requirements) displacement of your engine, year of your car, and how far you want to take it. in my case - 2000 S with no emissions requirements - the parts list is:

$40 997 plenum new, $100 cayman/996/997 used throttle body with the four fasteners and gasket, $100 used 987 air box with the MAF housing and the rubber coupler, a 3.25” OD aluminum coupler, a 3.25” ID silicone elbow, and some approriately sized hose clamps. a bunch of tricks to install it all, and 10 minutes at your local shop that has a pst2 or piwis to push the appropriate tune onto your car (in my case i am running a 2000 996 ROW tune, where the 996 part allows me to run the larger MAF housing, and the row part gets me past the no cat stuff).

otherwise, cheap chinese headers, midpipe and muffler, and a 4” underdrive pulley. $1000 for ‘x’ horsepower. basically, you are using all the work done by porsche to improve the 9xx series and incorporating it onto your car. with the cheap chinese exhaust stuff, it is all fabspeed knockoff.
