Time for good tires.
 

I am ready to put a set of really good performance tires on the 2000 "S" on 17 inch rims. Been using Kumho M&S ECSTA 4x. Good tires that really hug the corners but I want something better.

Price is a factor for me as I'm not working full time now days. Mileage is important too. I'm thinking something in a summer tire as the car now stays in the garage during the Southwest Idaho winter about December thru February.

Stories of your tires and recommendations are welcome.

I'm on my second set of Hankook Ventus V12 evo2s. Great tire, wears well, plenty sticky and not too pricey. I feel they're excellent, especially for the price.

I'd say the best overall performance (stick, quiet, rain, mileage) choice would be Michelin PS2s. But ya gotta pay. $$$

A great performance (better stick, less mileage than th PS2s) choice, for slightly less cost would be the Yoko AD08R.

Go to Tire Rack. They provide multiple reviews and test results on most of their tires. Or go to your local tire store and explain what your looking for. I’m sure they will be happy to help.

Are you looking for street performance tire, or one for track and AX?

For street, Michelin Pilot SuperSports are a great choice. Its a better tire than the PS2
for track, Bridgestone RE-71R is the go to tire

for less expensive options, the Sumotomo HTR ZIII can't be beat. I have run them and the Hankook V12 and the Sumi IMHO is a better a tire, lower cost as well.

Neither the Sumi or the V12's will be great for track or AX

Those are all summer tires and since you are in ID, you probably want all season tires now as its going to get cold there soon.
I don't have a recommendation for all season tires as here in San Diego, I don't need them

+1 for Tirerack. Nice people with good info and fair prices. I've done business with them since they were a small company, but even though they are pretty big, it's the same feel as a small tire shop, plus I like that they actually test tires...rare to find someone these days that tests what they sell.

+1 for Michelins in terms of quality and traction--even summer tires. Mileage is dependent on your driving style regardless of tire.

I slightly disagree. I have the MPSS on my 991S. Very good tires.

But, I've had many sets of PS2s on my Boxster.

The MPSS are the better every day performer, better in the wet, less $$ and longer tread wear.

The PS2s are the better dry performance tire, still very good in the rain, cost more.

This has been my experience. YMMV.:)

I'd rather have the PS2s, but they don't make my size; 245/35/20 and 305/30/20 since I don't drive in the rain, and don't really care about tread life.

Years ago, I had the Yoko AD08s on my 993 Turbo. Amazing tire. Also can't get in my size.

That is what I am getting once Tirerack has them back in stock.

This is a good choice--it's a rest of world Bridgestone tire that's been rebranded for the US market. People have been very happy with them so far.

I am running Conti ExtremeContact Sports on my '02 with 18" wheels. Good tires except for the tramlining.

+1 on the Sumotomo HTR ZIII. Very good tire for not much money.

Just fitted a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 this week , the car is not on the road yet wheel bearings to finish fitting. The previous tyres were V12 Evos ,when I removed the left rear tyre it had a 40mm cut down to the steel cords in the centre tread ,ruined . It was impossible to get another V12 265/35/18 as it is a deleted tyre in the Hankook range down here . I'm looking forward to trying the MPS4 , I was told that they are the new replacement for the MPSS range

Hankook RS4 is an extreme performance summer with very good grip and wears well. We get about 2x the mileage on RS4 as we do with RE71R. Price is pretty good too.

I'll never stop using Continental DWS06's if I have a choice. I've had Michelin, Pirelli, Khumo and plenty others and I'm just done. I drive my car season wide, so summer, monsoon, winter..... And no tire I've had on this car, compares even the slightest to the Conti DWS06's. Awesome Grip, very long life span..... Price is a lil ehh, Around 400 for my 285/35/19 rear's.... Each. but they are worth it.

A lil story on the lifespan.... I've had numerous alignments done. The Front tires for the past 3.5 Years have outlasted a set of Michelin, Pirelli and some Firestones. And I didn't even buy them new. They were take offs from someone that didn't like the size or something. I had issues with Traction or lifespan with all these rear tires. However the Front DWS's have outlasted and gripped better than them all. So I finally said screw it and put the most recent rear tires to the DWS06's. And still the front DWS's have life on them.

I absolutely love them.

I am running Bridgestone Potenzas/ RE-11's for the summer then I switch To BF Goodrich Comp TA-2's for the winter. They are all season tires. Great grip and aggressive tread design. They are very reasonably priced too. I did late season autocross on them and got better PAX numbers with the all season tires. Good luck.

I agree with Darkstar. I love my DWS 06 's on my 18 inch rims. (Dry, Wet, Snow..cast depth markers in the tire indicate how far worn by letter disappeance) They hold well in the dry, do well in the rain but even though they're designed for snow when they're new, I don't get snow here in Arizona. They are a little pricey but they feel real good at higher speeds.

I tried the DWS on my 17 rims. Great grip. Even took the Box on snow covered dirt roads and got right through. HOWEVER... the cornering was hideous. Under steer like crazy. Had to get them off. Luckily I had the 90 day love them or leave them deal.

I'm replacing all 4 tires now, and there are not that many options for 255/40 17. I had Bridgestone Potenza RE050 and I was thinking of changing brand, as these Bridgestones weren't particularly remarkable in anything.
Michelins are too expensive, I'm thinking of getting Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric, but there's only version 3 for the front (205/50 17) and version 2 for the rear :/
