Take your pick. WP bearing fails which is usually the failure made. When that happens with the Composite impeller the plastic breaks off and the pieces of plastic clog the very small coolant passages in the head leading to localised overheating and a cracked head.

Metal impeller? WP bearing fails and now the metal impeller chews a hole in the block that is not repairable. Motor is done.

I say just replace the plastic impeller WP every 5 ish years or so.

Apparently it should be done earlier. Like every 3yrs or so. And time is as important as is mileage to water pump life
