Oil temperature sensor install
I've been searching for a conclusive answer on this with limited results. Apparently the existing oil temp sensor is not highly accurate (read with a Durametric) as it is linked to the coolant temp. I am installing an oil pressure gauge using the 996 sensor and I would also like to install a temperature sensor somewhere but I don't know where! Any thoughts on this? :confused:

Some say it isn't accurate but my oil temp sender is installed in the driver valve cover in the same spot the factory oil pressure switch is installed on the other side.
My testing with durametric, which reads from the sump using a dual oil level/temp sensor, matched up to around 200/210F which was as hot as I got it while street driving during the test. It's probably all relative but I can use it to get a sense of if the car is getting hotter, stabile, or cooling down. I had taken some pictures with the durametric data and the gauge but lost it in a phone crash. |

Exactly what I was planning, but with pressure and oil temperature! I like the white faced gauges: clear and bright and they go with my other gauges.

Is the oil temperature sensor generic or Porsche specific? Can I pick up anything on Amazon? Looks like just about anything should work but may need a thread adapter?

I used a matched vdo sender and gauge, m14x1.5 is the size of the port, search my thread for the part numbers as I don't have them handy on my phone.. You can probably get both from amazon and I used jegs high temp automotive wire, rated for underhood operation, to bring the signal up to my gauges. I ziptied it to the air intake tube and then to the shifter cables and bring it down the center console.
My hot tip for installing the oil pressure sensor, remove the panel behind the seats and that may make it easier to tighten the sender instead of the complex crowfoot wrench solution. You have to take that panel.off anyway to run the wire anyway. |
Here's an option / example:

Why did you choose the shorter one (like Steve) as opposed to the longer model?

I suppose the shorter one is just long enough to be through into the oil circulating space. I don't know what is or are there underlying to interfere with the longer projected one.
The Pelican part is the shorter one, found later. |
