Oil Analysis, High Aluminum?
 

Hi Everyone,

I just got the report back from my third oil analysis from Blackstone Labs. The last two oil changes have been using Castrol Edge 10W-40, LN Spin-On Oil Adapter, and Wix 51042XP Filter. The second oil change I used magnets, the latest one I used a FilterMag. The first oil change was using Mobil 1 10W-40 and the standard canister filter. The iron and copper seem to have dropped, but alumimum is up. They also mentioned the viscosity is low and the oil is shearing? Anything to be worried about? It's interesting see the difference between oils and filters.

Aluminum looks fine to me too. Viscosity looks a little low but not super low, is this from.street driving?

Recently I have been driving around town a lot, less highway. I always do my best to drive to full operating temperature, but there have been more cold starts in the last year than I would like.

Rick: I attached my UOA from Blackstone so you could have a visual comparison. This is also using Castrol Edge 10w-40. Everything looks similar except as noted the viscosity which appears to be consistent. A thought I have is that fluid shear can be caused by fluid flow under pressure through an orifice. With this in mind I would wonder if you have changed the oil pressure relief piston? Could be worthwhile and it is cheap and easy.

I changed the oil piston (PN: 997.107.125.01) and spring at 95k miles. I didn't change it for any reason other than I was in there, and thought it couldn't hurt. Everything was torqued to spec. Thanks for posting your report as a point of comparison!
