I was thinking the same, but surely he would note a dead pedal

Look underneath the car

There is a possibility that one of the CV joints went south (hopefully) as this would be a lot easier (and cheaper) to replace than a broken clutch/transmission.

+1. Have a look under your car. Just about certain you will find one end of a CV joint disconnected. Most likely where it attaches to the transaxle.

Unfortunately this can also result in a broken transmission mount.

No dead pedal.
Symptoms. Loud bang, could not put the car in gear, clutch pedal feels normal. Turned the car off tried to engage the transmission and then start the car but nothing just an engine that would start and rev up.
