Oil and Tires
I'm picking up my newly purchased Boxster tomorrow. The dealership was to have changed the oil and I just want to confirm they used a Porsche recommended oil for the Boxster. Can anyone provide some insight for me until I can get my hands on the manual?
Also, the tires have 7/32s tread on the front and 6/32s on the rears. They tell me that new tires have around 9/32s. Do these numbers sound right? Thanks. |
Hi,
The Boxster uses Mobil1 as the recommended Oil. The recommended change interval is 15k mi., but you don't want to go that long. 7.5k-10k mi. or annually (if lower mileage) is a better recommendation, but at least annually. 0w-40 is the weight you want to use. The Oil change calls for 8.75 Qts. The Tires sound about right for the Car and mileage. Proper inflation and alignment are key to getting the most from the Boxster's Tires, because it does like to eat them. Good Luck!... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |
The specific M1 recommended is the Euro spec 0W-40 oil. Regular M1 does not meet this spec and will not go the 15-20K recommended OCI.

Jump, enjoy those tires (new ones next year ain't gonna be cheap!) and keep and eye on the back rubber as it wears out fast on the insides.
You can make them last a little longer by having them knocked off the rims and put on the other side making the inside bit the new outside bit. That's how you have to "rotate" unidirectional tires. I do this a lot and it works well... just remember you have to do it every 2k or so or the wear becomes so great it doesn't do much good. |
Thanks for the tips Randall, I'll definitely keep them in mind. I'm not too worried about it though. I travel ALOT for my job (I flew ove 200,000 miles last year) so I don't put a lot of miles on my vehicles. I only put 4k on my jeep last year and now that will be split between two vehicles. I'm hoping to get at least two years out of this set of tires.
