actuator in door sill, early boxster?

Hello all.
After sorting out the engine and spending a weekend on the track where I learnt to love driving the car I'm finally at the stage where I'm gutting it ready for seats and a cage. I am going to remove the door sill levers and trim, but I will keep the cables to open the front and rear compartments. I will make some loops to make them easy to pull.

In the sill trim there is also an electrically operated actuator which goes to the front. This seems odd to me since there is a cable actuated by a lever for opening the front lid.

What is this actuator for?
Can it safely be ditched to simplify and save weight?

I've been doing some testing and as far as I can understand it locks the front bonnet lever. Is this some kind of security device to keep the bonnet from being opened if the alarm goes of or something similar? If so will removing it disable the alarm?
