Cross threaded bolt....need advice
 

So I'm doing a transmission fluid change on a new to me boxster and I come across this cross threaded fastener:

I believe that the threaded hole in the body is toast. What would you recommend I do? I'm thinking that I should re-tap the body hole and move up a size in the fastener. What size/grade/material fastener would you recommend? Or should I do something else?

Hi, try another similar bolt in the hole to see if it screws in freely.
If not run a tap in to it to clean it out and try again and run a die nut(make sure correct pitch) down the bolt or use a 3 cornered file. If this fails you may have to drill and tap to next size up.

I would try a new bolt BUT first I would run a tap through the existing threaded hole Without looking I suspect it is a caged nut within the body You need to be careful it doesn,t break loose and spin in the body so that's why I would want to clean/retap its threads before attempting to replace the bolt.

Run a tap up thru there carefully and get a new bolt. Don't try to fix that, you will never get it right. Woody on here breaks plenty of car and surely has a mountain of these in the yard.

Lots of lube , tap wrench and use the tap with the pointed end. Go slow back and forth. If you bull it you could break the tap. Then you got a bigger mess.

Many thanks to everyone and to Woody who suggested that I can get this bolt at my local hardware store. Its a standard M10 x 1.50 bolt. Chased the threads with a tap and the new one threaded right in.

Did you use a grade 5 or 8? I'd go with grade 5 if it was me. Remind me if you ever buy something from me and I'll throw that bolt in.
