986 banging noise
 

Got a banging noise coming from yhe rear of my 986 I've had it on my ramp (I'm a mechanic) and cannot find anything obvious (I know embarrassing right) lol anyway the only thing that has been mentioned to me before is the control arms although when on ramp does not show anything abnormal probably because the arms are hanging down causing them to be under load. It doesn't bang when going over speed bumps only breaks in the road and potholes. Any help would be great

My bet is on the control arms, but double check the rear sway bar bushings. The bushings on one of my cars had hardened and made a noticeable noise over potholes and breaks in the road. I didn't realize how bad they were until after I changed the control arms.

It's most likely the rear track arms, which go from just behind the seats to the control arm. The spherical bearings that mount to the chassis wear, and you get lots of clunking over sharp bumps. If it sounds like the banging is from right behind you, that's it.

They are pretty straightforward to replace.

I think that's the one I meant... I'm terrible at remembering suspension terminology and I like pictures.

I meant the one that you have in the photograph, or #8 in the diagram. I've heard them called trailing arms and track rods., but trailing arm is the best expression for the part in my mind!

I also have a loud clunking noise that is coming from the rear passenger side of the car. At first, I thought it was the speaker bar not being secured down to the engine cover because the sound was like something was banging up and down back there. I checked to make sure that was secure and it was. After reading these posts, I ordered new rear trailing arms from vertex auto. They rebuild these arms with solid polyurethane bushings and hopefully this will fix my problem. At the same time, I will replace the sway bars, front and back, with the Eibach bars and bushings as well as the drop links. Should be a fun project.

A new set of #8's cured all my back end banging also a few months ago, +1 to changing them.
