Two questions about my 2002 base with the tiptronic is ims still a big issue 2. Car starts in first but once warm the trans only drops to second is this normal?

Supposedly Tips have had fewer issues with IMS but I've never seen that substantiated by anyone. Yes, going into second is normal for the Tip.

The ims is no different between a manual and a tip. You can help the subject by driving in manual mode once warm to keep rpm up and avoid lugging on the ims which is bad for it.

The only reason Tiptronic cars have suffered few IMS failures is because there is fewer of them; they share the same level of risk as manual cars.

thank you all for your input. very helplful. I can move on from the shifting and focus on the IMS. car is fine, but will watch metal flakes and talk to mechanic about when to address the IMS issue.

It`s normal not to downshift to 1st. I read that too but the trans really isnt what causes the IMS failure. If you can afford it get it done.

Boxtertoy,
If you are keeping the car you should address the IMS BEFORE you find metal chips, because once you get them, it May Be Too Late...

Once debris is found its too late to use any of our products... Because the engine won't pass the mandatory pre- evaluation. Retrofitting an engine with a failing bearing is almost certain death for the replacement component.

Boxtertoy,

Great call..! And since you don't need a new DMFW or clutch assembly, the repair should be (price wise) more manageable.

Good luck!

I have the exact same - base 2002 with tiptronic, 103k miles and no issues. I went to the local dealer and they quoted me $5-6,000!!! I almost lost it!
