Screeching sound from 1st gear half-clutch

Hi guys,

Has anyone here ever encountered a brief screeching sound sometimes when you hold a half-clutch for too long (4 to 6 seconds) at around 4000 rpm? This seems like trouble brewing and I need to know if I should go back to the dealer and get it sorted out under warranty

How many miles do you have on it? It sounds like you're wearing thin and it's not grabbing well enough.

Hi,

4-6 seconds with the Clutch partly engaged at 4k RPM? What on Earth would possess you to do this? 6 seconds is an eternity.

If you did this consistently, it's probably your Clutch Disc, T/O Bearing and Pilot bearing and I bet you have Hot-Spotted the Flywheel, requiring it's replacement as well. This is likely to cost you BIG!!...

There's 73,000 km on the car already.

From the service history, it seems like the clutch has never been changed yet. Jim could also be right.

Jim, I don't do it that often, just occassionally (and no, I'm not doing launches) when I'm waiting to squeeze out into a gap in traffic. If I behave myself and release the clutch normally, it all works fine

changing. The dealer is in the midst of replacing my damaged alloys and i'm now on a set of stock rims with continental sport contact (not CSC2) from June 2001, so you can imagine the kind of wheelspin i get if I clutch out too quickly. Especially on cement paths....

During normal driving my launches never reach above 1800RPM or so...

You shouldn't even see 1800rpm, you should be letting the clutch out as you press the gas and it should engage normally without prematurly raising the RPM during the clutch release. It shoudl take off just like a automatic car does, rpm and all. Just go up as you go.

If your reving it then letting out the clutch you need to practice better control of the clutch and modulate it better at lower rpm. This is how a clutch is worn out even with reving it upto 1800 rpm (double idle) and letting the clutch out.
