TS cat delete install
So I started into the heavy lifting of this adventure this morning using as much of the good info found here as possible. Only two issues so far. The first is the 13.5mm nuts and bolt heads that came with the kit. 13mm too small, 14mm too big. Not 1/2", nor 9/16". There is a difference in manufacturing of mm sized parts in different areas of the world, though I've not seen it in years. I do have more faith in Craftsman sizing, as I tested five different wrenches and sockets, all with the same results. Second is the welded nuts on the header side of the header/exhaust pipe flange connection. But only the top one on each side - two spot welds each. That was a surprise! And this was the easy part? I keep thinking that at 67 I'm too old for this.

TS bolts
As mentioned previously in other threads, do yourself a favor and do not use the hardware that comes with the TS kit - they are low grade bolts and nuts. I broke 2 during installation - go to home depot and get higher grade bolts so the heads or shaft does not break when you tighten them. Trust me, it is worth the few dollars and avoid the frustration of broken bolts....

Additionally/specifically , use stainless, metric Tap bolts (full thread) .

Done and done. Other than the nuts and bolts this was an easy project. No issues installing the pipes, fitment was good. All in all, worth every bit of the price. Kudos to those who went before and showed me the way!

How do you like the results?

Pleased with the results. My hope was that the sound would increase a bit and not be too loud. That's what I got, but have no way to quantify what that means. Increases in hp and torque were not part of the goal.

It certainly gives you a "little"of everything. Horsepower, torque and sounds. Not bad for $150 and some time.

Did you just delete cats and use stock exhaust, or do both cat delete and exhaust?

Yes, I know it may improve WHP a little, but for crying out loud, they are there for a reason How do you like your air? clean and breathable, or would you prefer to be able to cut it with knife like in Beijing? While living is CA may be a PIA as far as smog testing, at least we can breathe our air safely |

well, i'd wager the environmental impact of my decision to remove my cats against your decision to have children and we'll see who is a bigger contributor to climate change. not to mention that a lot of the steel for the SIX cars in your signature probably came from asia and contributed to the pollution issues there. I think it is difficult for any north american, let alone those on a porsche forum, to have any kind of high horse in a climate change discussion, so question the need to belabour an exhaust thread with it?

I also installed the Top Speed Cat delete pipes on my Boxster after I replaced my FDM exhaust with a PSE. The PSE was to quiet for me. Based on Kram's (KRAM36) recommendation (I miss him) I used EasySeal Exhaust Clamps. EasySeal Exhaust Clamps: Torca EasySeal Clamps in Stainless Steel for Lap Joint Connections
As far as JayG's concern regarding deleting an emission component it is a fair topic to be discussed. During my searches on the topic I found that the Boxsters with the Top Speed cat delete pipes would still pass a smog test where a sniffer was used. I appears that the upstream cats are efficient enough to keep the emissions within compliance. You will fail a visual inspection though. |
I think the Cat removed would be the 2ndary cat downstream of the first one so he still does have a Cat on the header pipe I presume? It will still pass CA sniff tests with just the one Cat per side, but I found out they just take your ECM's eval of the Cat condition for Cars after 1999 and omit the sniffer now.
Oh, lets not get started on climate change and pollution, there can be a LOT of finger pointing in every direction. The Electric car drivers would be stunned at how much total pollution they actually contribute, they have just relocated the source away from their own tail pipe so they can claim to be pure...dream on! Personally, I think the earth needs a good die off every now and then because it seems like things tend to go off the rails after a while. There's a high percentage of crazy everywhere these days it seems :p |
