TS cat delete install

So I started into the heavy lifting of this adventure this morning using as much of the good info found here as possible. Only two issues so far. The first is the 13.5mm nuts and bolt heads that came with the kit. 13mm too small, 14mm too big. Not 1/2", nor 9/16". There is a difference in manufacturing of mm sized parts in different areas of the world, though I've not seen it in years. I do have more faith in Craftsman sizing, as I tested five different wrenches and sockets, all with the same results. Second is the welded nuts on the header side of the header/exhaust pipe flange connection. But only the top one on each side - two spot welds each. That was a surprise! And this was the easy part? I keep thinking that at 67 I'm too old for this.

TS bolts

As mentioned previously in other threads, do yourself a favor and do not use the hardware that comes with the TS kit - they are low grade bolts and nuts. I broke 2 during installation - go to home depot and get higher grade bolts so the heads or shaft does not break when you tighten them. Trust me, it is worth the few dollars and avoid the frustration of broken bolts....

Gelbster 11-27-2015 08:11 AM

Additionally/specifically , use stainless, metric Tap bolts (full thread) .
https://www.boltdepot.com/Metric_hex_bolts.aspx?nv=l
and Nordlock washers:
http://mdmetric.com/nordlock/NL_cat_ENG.pdf
Maryland metric and Bolt Depot will have all you need.

Done and done. Other than the nuts and bolts this was an easy project. No issues installing the pipes, fitment was good. All in all, worth every bit of the price. Kudos to those who went before and showed me the way!

How do you like the results?

morgal48 11-29-2015 10:36 AM

Pleased with the results. My hope was that the sound would increase a bit and not be too loud. That's what I got, but have no way to quantify what that means. Increases in hp and torque were not part of the goal.

Porsche9 11-29-2015 11:05 AM

It certainly gives you a "little"of everything. Horsepower, torque and sounds. Not bad for $150 and some time.

Did you just delete cats and use stock exhaust, or do both cat delete and exhaust?

Just the cat delete. The sound at idle is now a bit deeper and more to my liking, and starting around 4000 rpm it becomes obviously louder from the seat. Not sure anyone unfamiliar with these cars would notice a difference.

Ya know, I was thinking about people removing their catalytic converters

Yes, I know it may improve WHP a little, but for crying out loud, they are there for a reason

How do you like your air?
clean and breathable, or would you prefer to be able to cut it with knife like in Beijing?

While living is CA may be a PIA as far as smog testing, at least we can breathe our air safely

I was thinking that folks should learn to read and write, then respond. How does one "breath out"? What is "breathable"? And I've seen the smog in CA - that's where the term originated, right - and the clear blue skies here in TX. You lose. On so many things.

JayG 12-07-2015 07:12 AM

Whell it mite have been tghe time I spent living in texass breathing the filthy air their that effacted my brain and my ability to spel

Ever post something from a phone or tablet with the autospell on?

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/breathable

Oh I forgot, EVERYTHING is better and bigger in TX :barf:

Yea, SMOG used to be a big problem in CA. Since strong air pollution standards were enacted, it is virtually not a problem anymore unlike some of the flyover states

The point is deleting the cats is increasing air pollution

I guess you don't believe that we have climate change either

The Radium King 12-07-2015 09:36 AM

well, i'd wager the environmental impact of my decision to remove my cats against your decision to have children and we'll see who is a bigger contributor to climate change. not to mention that a lot of the steel for the SIX cars in your signature probably came from asia and contributed to the pollution issues there. I think it is difficult for any north american, let alone those on a porsche forum, to have any kind of high horse in a climate change discussion, so question the need to belabour an exhaust thread with it?

RK, at least you acknowledge there is climate change LOL.

The point I was making before it got derailed with a spelling mistake was removing the cats does increase air pollution. Yes, most track cars have open exhausts, but I would venture to guess they also run very efficiently and have low emissions . I could be totally wrong on that

Additionally, it is definitely against the law here in CA and probably also federal law

All to make the car louder or gain a few HP?

Sure, a relative handful of cars won't have that big or even measureable impact on the environment as a whole, but it does add up

And yes, I would like my kids and their kids and their kid' kids... to be able to breathe the air

Porsche9 12-07-2015 11:44 AM

LA was very much like Bejing when I was growing up.

Yeah it's better but it's still pretty bad and now the crap from China comes across the Pacific. When I'm out there in summer it's still gets pretty bad. The Chinese still use coal to heat their homes!

morgal48 12-08-2015 05:11 AM

If you lack basic grammar skills how can you be sure if you know your chit or know you're chit? As unfair as it may be people do look at you differently, whether you care or not. So...which is it?

Chuck W. 12-08-2015 07:17 AM

I also installed the Top Speed Cat delete pipes on my Boxster after I replaced my FDM exhaust with a PSE. The PSE was to quiet for me. Based on Kram's (KRAM36) recommendation (I miss him) I used EasySeal Exhaust Clamps. EasySeal Exhaust Clamps: Torca EasySeal Clamps in Stainless Steel for Lap Joint Connections

As far as JayG's concern regarding deleting an emission component it is a fair topic to be discussed. During my searches on the topic I found that the Boxsters with the Top Speed cat delete pipes would still pass a smog test where a sniffer was used. I appears that the upstream cats are efficient enough to keep the emissions within compliance. You will fail a visual inspection though.

jb92563 12-08-2015 07:30 AM

I think the Cat removed would be the 2ndary cat downstream of the first one so he still does have a Cat on the header pipe I presume? It will still pass CA sniff tests with just the one Cat per side, but I found out they just take your ECM's eval of the Cat condition for Cars after 1999 and omit the sniffer now.

Oh, lets not get started on climate change and pollution, there can be a LOT of finger pointing in every direction. The Electric car drivers would be stunned at how much total pollution they actually contribute, they have just relocated the source away from their own tail pipe so they can claim to be pure...dream on!

Personally, I think the earth needs a good die off every now and then because it seems like things tend to go off the rails after a while. There's a high percentage of crazy everywhere these days it seems :p

Thanks Chuck.

Where do you find a smog shop that will pass the car with the downstream cats removed?

Also, I meant to say before, IMHO, obnoxiously loud cars belong only at the track, not on the street. It really sucky to be driving with my top down and get blasted by a really loud exhaust so I can't hear anything else. the driver does not hear how loud and annoying it is from behind or to one side

I have two smog shops I use. Now that they are only using the OBD II to smog check '96 and later cars it is a pretty easy in and out as long as all the flags are set. These folks are pretty unmotivated and don't do a full inspection. With our cars you would have to have it on a lift or get down pretty low to see the secondary cats.

With the The Top Speed cat delete pipes it defiantly makes it louder. But not substantially. To me it is more of a tone difference. However, I will bow my head in shame..... When I had a Harley it was loud. And, when I had my 993 Cab I had Super Cup exhaust on it.... very loud. I've changed... honest! :p
