idler pulleys
Hello guys.
i recently sold my car (again) and one of the things i never got around to do, is replace the 3 idler pulleys. was wondering what are the options out there beside the OEM parts. i know there is an option to press new bearing in there, but was wondering if they are any aftermarket parts or alternatives that might make a good fit. thanks in advance. Meir. |

No worryes and thanks for the kind words. I'm looking at 996 these days, so I'm still going to stay in the neighborhood. |
I just purchased these from Rock Auto, ~ $24 each. Received 3 days are.

That is really a good deal. |
Meir,
Your diy write ups were great -thanks ! Yes,I have pressed in new bearings into the pulleys. But it is a dubiously 'smart' idea. I have a 20t press. I managed to crack one pulley ! I only noticed the hairline crack when I cleaned the pulley before fitting it. If you do press out the old bearing -soak it in penetrating fluid for days before using any force on it .When it eventually moves, press it back and forth and reapply the penetrant. It is tempting to just heave on the brutal 20 t press. Support the pulley perfectly or you will bend it. Freeze the replacement bearing and the press die before you insert it. The complete pullies are so cheap from Rock Auto ,it isn't worth it imho. So Meir , when will you get a replacement Boxster? |

one thing for sure, my next boxster is gong to have a 3.4L or above. my dream car is the spyder, but my bank account doesn't align with my dreams at the moment :D |
Meir,
Let me give you a hint on the 911 that you may want to hide from your wife: 1. They cost way more than a Boxster S. 2. At the first bend you will be safer/faster in a Boxster 3. Just search "911 snap+oversteer" or lift off oversteer. Suggest you may enjoy reading this & discussing it with Pedro - he is near you? Meir,
Wow ,what a car ! Suggest you devote a new thread to the visit/inspection/test drive with lotsa photos .I think it would be of great interest here :-). |
Meir, et al, I just received the pulleys. They had a 15 mm dia inside bore bearing.
They would not fit the existing spacers/bushings on my 97, bearing inner bore 17mm. You will either have to machine the existing bushings (if they are 17mm id), or buy from Pelican. They include new 15 mm dia bushings (I think). |
