Brake seal seating
 

Can someone please tell me/show me the proper way to seat/push in the new piston dust shields on the front calipers. I rebuilt a set of front S brakes that I bought from another member and put the new dust shields on but am not sure if they are seated correctly. I only pushed them in by hand for fear of tearing them.

Those look right to me, all the ones I have seen (a whopping total of 16 on my calipers :) ) the dust seal was not perfectly flush. If you pull out the piston by hand and push it back by hand does the dust boot expand and retract without the inner ring popping out of the retaining groove in the caliper?

Haven't tried that yet. I will try it now though.

I tried by hand but no luck.. I will have to use the compressor later on to check. I will keep you updated and thank you for the advice.

The pistons are hard to put in and out aren't they :)

I had bought a kit to redo the seals on my calipers when I was painting them because the first one I took off looked like it had a bad seal. It turned out that some gunk had gotten down in it and made it look "puffy" if that makes sense. I took it off and it was fine, and (then later after I hard time getting the pistons out and ran out of time) I cleaned it and put it back on. It was quite difficult to get it to "pop" back into the groove. You could try to rotate the seals and if they don't rotate they are probably seated in the grooves.

They came out pretty easy with very low pressure of compressed air. I found one scuffed up piston and got a new one pretty reasonable from stop tech and replaced all the seals and what not on the front calipers. This is my last thing to do. I have had these things laying around for probably a year and just have not put them on. My stock 99 brakes are fine, I just always wanted the big reds. They also look cool :) and will help stop my 3.4 :)
