Shifting improvement options for 02 Boxster S
Recently picked up an 02 Boxster S that I plan to use primarily for DE events but that will be street legal. Currently has a OEM 996 shifter installed w/ new cables and fresh adjustment. The shift throw seems very long in comparison to my previous DE cars but they were American or Japanese front engined cars w/ the shifter directly connected to the transmission. The shift throw is not a big deal on the street but on the track I think it can present some challenges. First choice would be an OEM option that shortens up the shift throw and next choice would be an "aftermarket" short shifter. All opinions welcome as the car is brand new to me and I am just starting to explore my options.

The 9x7 shifter is an OEM option that reduces the throw by 15%
http://986forum.com/forums/diy-project-guides/21073-diy-997-shifter-install-2.html I installed this and it helped a shifting issue I was having due to wear on the ball end connectors that is documented in that thread as well. I also changed my Transmission Fluid to OEM Porsche fluid and that helped make the shifting better as well. Steve |
A fresh 987 engine mount and some poly gearbox mounts help too.

Suggest you search "ball bearing shifter" .One of the crew was making these and they got great reviews. It was waaay cheaper than Numeric.

Hi :)
One of my short shifter will definitely give you a better feeling when shifting ! But I'm not currently making them, you'll have to wait a few weeks until I start the next round :) ben |
