1997 986 shofter cables

OK your Help would be greatly appreciated. I had a broken linkage I fixed that and also put in a short shifter. When I replaced the shifter I marked the cable, and used that mark when I put it back together. My car shifts great into all five gears but wont go into reverse. Do I need to compensate for the short shifter or perhaps cable stretch? Would I shorten the cable or push it in further in. And this would be the cable towards passenger seat? YOUR HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED!!!
