Is there a right way to remove a wheel?

I know it sounds like a dumb question. I was loosening the lug bolts on the wheel, everything was going fine until I reached the security bolt. The security socket crumpled like potted metal. I'm pretty sure I put the socket in as deep as it could go.

It looks like someone put a bolt cover on it. See if you can pull that crumpled mess out of the lug hole.
