Front Wheel Bearings
 

I just got the car aligned today and the mechanic told me that my 2 front wheel bearings are showing signs of wear. He suggested changing them in the near future. How common is it for these cars to have front bearing issues and how hard would they be to change for a DIY mechanic?

It is a fact of life for any car to go through wheel bearings. The ones in the 986 are not problematic. The bearings are pressed into the housing similar to front wheel drive cars.

There is a contraption that you can buy to do them in the car. I'm a fan of removing the hub and taking it to a machine shop instead. Ymmv.

I recommend waynes book, "101 projects for your boxster" as a place to start any DIY thoughts.

Just had mine done at 80K along with both sway bar end links, bump stops, and front struts. what a difference in the ride and steering - nimble again. Too much for me to do, paid my Indy for the work.

It is not uncommon to have to replace wheel bearings as the mileage nears or exceeds 100,000 miles. As Flaps said, this experience is not unique to Boxster's.

I'm a DIY guy and took a lot of pics. I used the 101 book but made changes based on my tools available.
