Starter ring gear sticking on my 987.1

Have approx 65k on my 2006 S and noticed lately the when starting the squeel when starting, the ring gear is slow to return and sticks for a moment,it s not every time but more and more. Can the starter be fixed,or can i pull it and clean and lube or does it need a new spring, otherwise it starts the car fine,so if i dont need a new starter i would prefer to fix.Anyone had this issue and found a fix thx warren

The starter's Bendix drive needs to be cleaned and lubricated, then the noise will go away.

JFP,thx,i can get the unit out but does the starter have to come apart to clean and lube it if so is it pretty basic or is there some tech tips to getting it apart and back together, thx

Also any special lube, grease or light weight oil preferred?

The starter needs to come out and have the Bendix drive on its snout cleaned off with something like WD 40, and then lubricated with a high temp grease like silicone brake grease. Just don't go nuts with the grease, you don't want it getting all over the clutch.

I dismantled my starter, cleaned all the gears, re-greased it and put it back in. Not a difficult job. Works just fine now!

May be a dump question but do i just disconnect the neg or does the positive battery terminal require disconnecting also. When reinstalling will the 06 987 models require a radio code or any special set up for fuel memory ect.thx
