Third brake light change

How hard is it to change the high mounted brake light? I'd like to change the red one for clear plastic with red LEDs.

Not difficult at all. Put the top in service position so the clamshell is out of the way to access the two screws that hold it down and unplug the harness. Reverse steps to install. Be aware that on some Boxsters the third light, tail lights and cruise control are all tied together in the fuse box. If you install LED tail lights along with an LED third light the current drops and the cruise control will not work unless you install a resistore at the third light.

:) Thanks!!

Be very careful with the light more importantly the bits that hold the light on to the screws. Mine came off in the car and fell in the trunk behind the liner and 2 hours later I found them.

Where should the resistor be installed, can it
be close to the harness plug for the 3rd brake light?

Be careful the resister gets hot. Attach it somewhere where heat isn't an issue.

Yes if there is room for it and heed emore93's advice.

I am new to this forum. And see this older post . The two rubber cylinders that hold the third lite in place fell into the lower space and I would appreciate any help in how to retrieve them. Could not find in the trunk after removing the felt backing. Only the computers, etc. Am I looking in the wrong place? Thanks, Bill

you will have to "fish" it thru the holes in the frame.

Just go buy two more. Cheap and less hassle!

Jamesp 09-01-2016 07:43 AM

I installed mine without a resistor and the cruise works fine.

treid 09-01-2016 09:28 AM

What resistor size

bcinphx 09-01-2016 01:55 PM

Thanks for the pic and info. I will try to fish...if not successful I will order a couple. No Porsche dealer in my little town!

It seems I can't find them. Is there a trick to finding those rubber cylinders. Thanks, Bill

Just a tip for anybody who cares. I took tight grommets put them in the holes. with a drop of super glue, so they would not spin and after about a half hour, I drilled holes just big enough for the screws to go through and remounted the third light.
