Boxster Air Oil Separator

The engine air-oil separator is an emissions device located on the top right rear corner of the engine. The separator is responsible for collecting residual gases and vapors contained inside the crankcase and funneling them back into the intake manifold where they can be burned in the combustion chamber. This reduces the overall emissions of the engine.
Curious, how do these "residual gases and vapors" get into the crankcase?

Kram; Since no response I'll throw in 2 cents worth! Most of the gasses are from sources such as ring end gap and blow-by. Crank case pressure has much effect on the sealing of the rings at various points along piston travel. There is an incredible amount of science/technology addressing this pressure and ring sealing.
