Need Advice - Wheel Bearing Noise?
 

I need some advice. I just noticed a new rotational squeak coming from the left side of my 2002 Boxster S. This squeak starts above 25 MPH and I think is getting worse. Could this be a wheel bearing issue? Thanks in advance for your help.

Does it change when you apply the brakes??

Wheel bearings don't squeak. I have one that needs replacing soon and it's more of a constant hum/growl that get loader as the cars speed increases.

Sorry for the delayed response, out enjoying a beautiful day here in Colorado. It's a higher pitch whine that starts above 25 MPH and stops below 25 MPH. The last time I just coasted down in gear.

My 2002S needed a right rear wheel bearing at just under 50K mi. Replaced them all. It did start as a roar that just got worse. I thought this a bit early at such low miles. Chevy truck just now needed front bearings at 130 K Mi. And that was after a family member hit something, bending a wheel and damaging a tie rod.

Mileage is not the only factor. Age plays a big part as does driving style, both yours and any po.

Wheel bearings don't squeak. They do make a grinding noise.

Take a look at your brakes and brake pads. Did you put adhesive pads on the back of the brake pads that retract the brake pads from the disk? German term for that is Dämpfungsblech - think it is damping plate in english.

Thanks all, I'm going to go work my brakes a little this weekend and see if that's the issue.

Problem solved! It must have been a rock or twig in the brake backing plate or caliper. It's amazing how much more fun the car is to drive when it doesn't squeak. Have a great weekend all and thank you
