Sorry JayKay,
All are spoken for now. I'll let you know if anything changes. |
Okay ....what is the spring rate of the stocker vs the McMaster? I might have something on hand....
|
39.76 lbs/inch for the McMaster-Carr, don't know about stock.
|
Ok, McMaster has been in since this AM, and I love it. It felt a little light at first since I've been no-spring most the week, but after some driving I think it is pretty dang great for a street car. Seems a little heavier than stock, little more feel, nothing drastic but definitely noticeable.
My only concern, not enough for me to change mine, but the spring itself is slightly shorter than stock, stock looks to be 4" long not 3.5". I just copied the Rennlist spring, so I don't know what the reasoning behind that was - although I can say from viewing that McMaster site that whoever picked it probably had a good grasp of what they were doing. It drives great, so no immediate concerns. Maybe someone who knows more can figure that out, or maybe it was explained in the original thread and I forgot. Anyways, it's a great compromise between stock and no-spring, and exactly what I was looking for. I also put in a 997 shifter last night, so it's like rowing gears in a whole new car. |
I believe the factory spring is around 75 lbs could be 50 don't remember exactly. I do know the McMaster spring is lighter
It is in one of the other threads on this subject, I think its a rennlist 996 forum thread |
All my springs are shipped.
Still loving mine. |

How hard was this to install? |
Craig.
I got the spring yesterday. Thank you very much. Now, I just need to find the time to install it :D |
Sweet Meir! Excited to hear what you think.
And Dlirium, sorry I missed your post. It was easy enough - just a tight spot. It's only held in with spring pressure, so it's just wiggling it around. Once you get your head in there it will be clear and easy. A vice made it very easy to get the old spring out, new one went in with hand pressure. I put some loctite on both ends of the spring because it looked like there was something similar in there before. Don't know if I should have or not, but no issues. My pro-tip: masking tape over the trunk latches on the door sill. I may or may not know for a fact that you can hook a belt loop on one of the handles and find yourself quite stuck with your arms up in the dash and your butt locked in place. Just so glad I got out before my wife wandered by and took a picture. Still love it, by the way. My dad (PO) drove it a couple days ago - between the exhaust, 997 shifter, and this clutch spring I think he was missing this ol' base Boxster. Edit to add: Meir, sorry it took so long - they said it would just be a few days. TRK, did you get yours yet? I imagine not if Meir just got his. |
Not got mine yet Craig but sure it's on its way!
|
Craig No problems at all.
i hope ill find the time to do it in one of the following weekend. got coolant tank to replace :(, engine mount, water pump, fix the top...and the list goes on. i will defiantly let you know my opinion once i have it in. thanks again. Meir. |
Based on the info above :-
The stock spring is 75lbs/inch and about 4" long The McMaster Carr spring # 9657k142 is 39lbs/inch but only 3-1/2" long. The deficiency in length is a problem? If so, check McMaster Carr #9657K136. This is slightly larger diameter(1.25" vs 1") It is 57 lbs vs 39 (or 75lbs.for OEM) Fully compressed it is longer than the short spring 2.81" vs 2.31" Is that 1/2" a problem? You can buy just one spring in # 9657k136 or this? |
Any further longer term opinions on putting in the light spring??

Yes that would be great .....was it the best fitting one you were able to find?
|
Honestly, I just went with the one the guys at rennlist found. Looks like they did a lot of digging, I just did the ol' copy and paste. 3 1/2 inches instead of 4 if I remember right - you'd never know driving it.
PM your address if you want it, and no worries if you want to take some time and try to find a different one. I think that thread (linked somewhere in this one) had a few other options, but those that tried a few of them preferred this one. |
Anyone have a McMaster spring left over from the six pack that they wouldn't mind parting with?
