Dome light wont turn on

The dome light in my 2001 wont turn on when you open the door, the switch is in the correct position as well. However as soon as I stick the key in the ignition it comes on. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? It is very inconvenient not having light when entering the car at night.

Install more outdoor lighting in your driveway lol

Start with the basic mate, you can pry the dome light assembly with a small and flat pry bar. Very easy removal, no screws! Remove the bulb and use abrasive paper to clean both metal ends. You may also want to do the same on the dome connection pins. Push back the pins gently with your finger so the squeeze the lamp properly.

Starting with above should rule out dirt and corrosion.

Could also be that the done light is not in its correct position (e.g. at off pos). I believe it needs pushing forward to be triggered by the doors. Center is OFF and pushed backward is ON. Something like that... forgot (read your user manual!)

Do the door windows drop properly when you lift the door handle?

I ask because the door switches often fail and then the car doesn't know that the door handle has been lifted or the door opened. In this case, it sounds like the car doesn't know that you opened the door and so it doesn't turn on the dome light.
