No Reverse after rear passenger axle broke???

Hi everyone, my friend has this 03 Boxster (non S) 5 speed where the rear passenger axle bolts all snapped off. We replaced the axle bolts and the axle end cap. But now we notice it won't shift into reverse. All forward gears work. I noticed what looks like some sort of pressure switch attached to the transmission that probably got sheared off by the axle as it was coming off. Any idea what this piece is? What it does? May be related to not being able to physically get the shifter knob in reverse?
I checked the shift cables and everything looks good, they are still in their brackets on the transmission side and I doubt they went out of adjustment at the same time the axle snapped off. Please let me know what you think, thanks.

Did the axle come into contact with the shift linkage when it broke?

It's possible. But I didn't notice any damage

The end looks like it's curled inward??? If a detent ball is missing it could prevent the necessary rod from moving. Can you see where the speedometer cable attaches?
