power steering quit!
 
hello board
i have a 98 boxster with 32k miles and after normal driving the power steering
stopped working. there was a smell of burning smoke underneith and white smoke
drove it a short distance home with little smoke and stiff steering. i havnt to it to the dealer yet. symptoms are white smoke, smell of burning oil (maybe powersteering fluid) fluid leak and very stiff steering.

any experience, with this issue or know what it may cost. please help thanks.
or does anyone know a good mechanic in the los angeles area they can recommend. thanks.

jrdiesel01,
You might want to check the serpentine belt. If you remove the access cover behind the seats you'll know right away. Does it smell like burning rubber?
I don't recall if you can see the belt from the top engine access cover. But tou might be able to stick your hand down there and feel for it.
I'm sure others will chime in.
Good luck. I hope it's just the belt. I replaced mine for about $25 and my free time.

Hi,

Sounds to me as if you either burst a PS Fluid Hose, or it sprang a leak from one of the connectors. Until you locate the source, do not drive the Car as you will burn out the PS Pump, if you haven't already. Hope this helps...
