Plugging 2 tires at Dougherty's cost $138?
I just paid Dougherty's of West Chester,PA $138 to plug two Kuhmo tires that had nails in them. Dougherty's indicated they take the tire off the rim, snip off the "mushroom" of the plug inside the tire and then patch over the interior. Is this a normal and reasonalbe procdure and cost?

Did they re-mount and balance the tires?
What will you be using these tires for in the future? |
Dougherty Tire Plug Costs
Dougherty's did rebalance the tires after plugging the two nail holes. My Boxster is a daily driver, no track use planned. I have Kuhmo's with 10,000 miles on them. In hindsight I would have preferred to invest the $138 into replacing the tires. I wish they informed me of the cost prior to doing the work.

Hi,
Yep, they did a proper repair, but as you see, the cost is quite high and goes some distance to buying replacements. Take care at Speed however as these Tires are compromised. Not to scare you, as a normal street driven Tire, they'll be OK. Expect the repair to leak however in several thousand miles... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |
a shop that does repair without authorization? did you give them the go ahead without determining cost?
|
Discount tire plugged two of my Kumhos and rebalanced them for $14.00 per tire. I was out the door for $28 plus tax. Your price is scary-high!
|
I would agree with Randall on this. Discount Tire is a deal on repairs.

Hi,
Don't forget, for many of us, expensive optional or aftermarket wheels are part of the deal. Shopping for Discount work may not always be prudent. Make sure they have the proper equipment and properly trained personnel. It's also probably not a bad idea to get a comittment from them beforehand that if the wheel is damaged or scratched, that they'll pay for replacement/repair - could save a lot of frustration and work later. Also, if you have a digicam, it's not a bad idea to shoot a pic of the Tire/Wheel before you have the repair done so that there is no question should a wheel be damaged. Hope this helps... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |
I think you should avoid this dealer. Isn't it also the one who charged $300 for an oil change?
|
My local independent Porsche shop did my tire repair for free last year - same dismount, plug & patch approach. They also do your first oil change por nada as a "get a taste of our service" marketing deal. And they do great work, BTW. Those in the MA area should check them out - www.autosportengineering.com .

I second that opinion. By now he's probably planning a week in the Carribean with what he's charged you so far. BTW that is the correct and proper way to "Patch" a tire. The discount tire way is way cheaper and does the same job. KRZ |
Let me repeat what MNBoxster wrote - do not drive at crazy fast speeds now.
I have a plug in one tire and I limit myself to 100mph. Difficult, yes. - Xavier |
