CV Axle Boots
Hey all. My new-to-me Porsche needs some CV Axle Boots. Right now, all 4 are leaking and while okay to drive, need attention soon. I don't have much know how myself - does anyone know what this sort of operation would cost to get fixed? Want to make sure I'm keeping my mechanic as honest as possible. Sometimes they see a Porsche and start rubbing their hands together!
2002 Boxster. Thanks! |
C V Repair
I just purchased a boot, two clamps and grease for
Bills 03 Boxster from Pelican Parts for $28.70 total. Really know know if that is a good price. Really Didn't feel like really looking for a better price. Items were not available in a kit. I have the part numbers if you need them. Took the agent about 20 mins to look everything Up. But he was nice about. Nothing like you want Me to look all this stuff up. Their cust service has always been Nice. Prices are not the lowest. We have not installed it yet. Jinx |
I think its about 3 hrs per axle so plan for $450-$750 in labor depending on the shop. Could be more if you're considering a dealer.

Think it's a good price.
Bought the original stuff from Porsche PZ Stuttgart. 4 boots and 8 clamps and 2 circlips where 180 Euro (245 USD). Porsche moon prices. Bought the grease from a VW dealer. 4 x 100 ml where about 30 Euro. Labour: Did it myself. Took about 3.5 hours per axle. Think if you've done it once you can do it faster. Special tools are needed. There is a how to on pelicanparts. Regards |
Why not swap out the axle ?
ToughOne CV Axle Assembly NCV70002: Choose the best Drive Shaft/Axle at Advance Auto Parts
At $99 per side ready to install this should be easier and you know starting out both inner and outer are new. |

I checked to see if the part from Advanced Auto Parts will fit a
03 Boxster. Per Advanced website it Will NOT fit. Jinx |
I did not know this
I didnt know that the axles were China-Cheepo , I Have had pretty good luck with Advance before. I got my rotors for my E36 there but I went with Bosh rotors and they have done well. I have always heard that if a CV joint ever ran bone dry and started making noise they were done...no matter if you re-lube them or not.
Thanks Dwight |
I just remove mine and have them rebuilt locally. Less than $80 both boots, joints cleaned inspected re greased.
|
Advance will typically use a local rebuilder (typically) I also doubt they actually have them.. but they *might* My local places offer rebuild services. They come to me, grab several axle sets and return them a few days later "rebuilt".. for what they charge me? not worth me getting dirty .. mark it up and pass it onto the customer!! LOL
I did build a set of custom axles for a Cayman a few weeks back.. PDK Cayman :) |
JFP, How do you rebuild the outer CV joint ? I know the inner is replaceable. Where is the best place to source these parts at reasonable prices ?
