Numeric Shifter & Numeric Cables Install - How Difficult?

So..... Since I have elected to keep the Boxster S forever..... I elected to continue to improve it. I have bought a Numeric Shifter and Numeric cup cables. They will be delivered on Tuesday.

I have swapped out the shifter console so I don't see that as a challenge. However, the cables are another story. I read Numeric's instructions (below) and it appears a tab challenging.

Has anyone done a Numeric swifter and Numeric cable install? If so, how hard was it?

Living in the Los Angeles area there are a number if indy shops I can go to if it is a big job. TIA.

I bought the cables already, they look oem except for the trans connection. I don't anticipate any difficulty installing. Simular to oem.

Let us know how the installation goes and how the shift actuation feels!

Are these the only cables available? I am getting trouble with 2-3 when the engine compartment is hot...hopefully this will cure it

Numeric cables

Chuck

I'm thinking about numeric cables, I have installed a short shifter and it is working ok, but I would really like better cables and connectors. Question did your shifter come with the tool that locates the shifter in the neutral position for cable adjustments. And I realize that your post was last year how is it going now that you have it broke in?

I ended up having the cables and console installed by a Porsche indy. I am very happy with the results. I am not sure if the numeric comes with the centering tool like the OEM ones do.

If you do go with the cables I believe you'll be happy with them.

hi Chuck,

Could you please describe the difference in feeling, engagement, smoothness, etc., between the OEM and the Numeric shifter and cables?

Thank you!

I had gone from the stock shifting console to a 997 console. Amazing difference. The upgrade to the Numeric console and cables was night and day. It is not buttery smooth, but more of a solid mechanical fell. Kind of like throwing a bolt of a rifle. Very precise. There are three throw positions and I have it on the longest. It feels half of the OEM throw. I can't imagine what the shortest, or even the middle ones feel like. I did a lot of searching on the various Porsche sites and the prevailing opinion was Numeric got it right with both the sifter and cables. There was an issue with some early units breaking at the top narrowing part of the shift lever but this has been rectified. Numeric also stood behind the issue and made the units right.

This is not a cheap upgrade, but for me it was worth it.

Thank you Chuck!

Yes the cables and the shifter box are indeed not cheap, but like you say it's a continuous improvement and a mod I always wanted to do.

I tracked my car with the POC for more than two years and remember sometimes missing third gear and getting fifth instead (operator error…) but it seems that the Numeric cables and shifter box help you minimize this issue.

I would love to drive one Saturday from OC to see your car, ok, ok, to feel the difference on the shifter

Of course if this is ok with you.

Anytime.... It would be worth the drive to try it before you lay out that kind of money.

Thank you Chuck!

I'll give you a ring the first weekend in November as I am away on a business trip until the end of the month, thanks again!

Ball Bearing shifter

There is an alternative source for the shifter - a fellow Forum member -Ben006 - offers one that gets rave reviews and it is way cheaper.

Easy for you - just trade some used parts :-).
