2.7 VS 3.2 Flywheel
Does anybody know what the difference is between the OEM 2001 boxster 3.2 Flywheel and the OEM 2.7 flywheel?
I have them both here and the look identical except they carry different part numbers. If there is a difference, would it still be safe to use a 2.7 flywheel with my 3.2 clutch? ....hmm just thought of this, maybe the pilot bearings are different, will need to check this. |
Maybe the clutch pressure plate mounting holes & pin locations?

I am also new to the boxster family, and was also wondering if there is an interchangeability chart or website which will show which parts are useable between models. it seems there are few answers I have been able to answer by my searches.

I new to the Boxster world, but I would think that the flywheel's would not cross. If i understand things correctly the flywheel in these cars helps balance the rotating assembly. Due to the different weights of that rotating mass between the engines the wrong flywheel would throw things out of balance.

but shouldn't the rotating assemble be balanced? if the flywheel was the balance, wouldn't it need to be specific to an individual engine? due to it's mass, a flywheel should provide some level of dampening, but for the actual balance, I would find it unlikely

Some engines use the flywheel as part of that balancing. I just am not sure about how the Boxster engine is designed. As an example the Jeep V8's from the 70's used external balancing. A 304, 360 and 400 small block all would interchange the same flywheel but the weighting was different. They would bolt up no problem, but would not balance. I know little about rebuilding the GM V8's but seem to recall that the balance was on the crankshaft of those engines and any V8 flywheel would work. I don't intend to rebuild a Boxster engine, but am interested in knowing the real answer to the question just for general knowledge. Hopefully someone with the real answer will chime in.

If you look up Assco LWFW they are universal between models. I believe you'll find the difference in the DMFW is the dampening springs.

The 5 speed and 6 speed transaxle make the biggest difference between the proper flywheel fitments with these vehicles.
The 2.7 is a 5 speed car, the 3.2 is a 6 speed car. That said, we've used TWO single mass, lightweight flywheels in the past 2 years. |
flywheel balancing..?
If I am installing a new DMFW and a new Sachs clutch, do you guys recommend to get it balanced as a higher assembly (DMFW w/clutch pressure plate?)

To help with this "investigation", I have put both flywheels side by side and see no difference. I have pictures, but have no idea how to attach them here. PM me if you'd like to see them or can help post them.
