Question on Front Strut / Shock Assembly

I flushed out the Brake system and installed ATE Super Blue brake fluid today and while I had the wheels off, I decided to become familiar with the suspension of my Boxster.

I looked at the front shock / strut assembly and near the top; where the assembly exits the wheel well, I noticed a pink(?) piece of rubber/plastic bulging out from the coil spring on both sides of the car.

It reminded me very much of a ruptured disc in my lower back.

I believe the part is #9 on the attached schematic.

My question: Do these items need to be replaced? and do I need coil compressors to do the job?

The car is a MY2004 S.

That sounds like the shock bumpstop. They are a pinlk / orange colour and prevent the shock bottoming out when suddenly compressed. They tend to disintegrate with age - or they did on my car. If yours are still in one piece I would leave them as is.
You have to remove the shock and spring to replace them.
