Drive Shaft Compatibility
Hi All,
Firstly sorry for the ignorance on the subject, so my question is, are the drive shafts on the 5 and 6 speed manual gear boxes the same for the 986 for the following years ; 1) 1997 - 2002 from what i can find they seem to be the same for the 2.7 and 3.2 2) 2003 - 2004 will these work on a Boxster 2000 S model ? As I discovered this week that my drive shafts outer cv's might need replacing, a local wrecker has 2 from a 2004 5 speed manual. that has 30,000km on them. As they are at a rather reasonable price I thought this might be an easy solution. Thanks in advance for your help cheers clayton |
5-speed and 6-speed axles are different - 6-speed is a longer transmission and requires longer axles. the 'S' model also had wider wheel bearings. also, things changed in 2003 - i think they went to the wider bearings on all models, but the 5- and 6- speed length difference remained. for a 2000 S i'm pretty sure you can use any 6-speed axle from 2000 to 2004, but nothing from a 5-speed.
edit to note that you can confirm by checking part #s; here's an online source: http://www.********************************************.com/porsche-parts/986-97-04/porsche_boxster_parts.php |
ok cool thanks for you help

IIRC, the 5 and 6 speeds are different with the 6 speed's CV covers wearing out first due to a different angle.
