Updated chain tensioner...tooth vs. roller

Hi, I have a '98 boxster that has had the "chain rattle" upon cold start-up since I purchased the car two years ago. Shortly after purchasing the car, I replaced the three internal tensioners with new, genuine porsche parts. It had little to no effect.

I know porsche issued an updated intermediate tensioner that I would like to try. It is noted that the updated tensioner is to be used with "tooth" style timing chains, as opposed to the "roller" type.

Does anyone know how I can determine what type of timing chain that I have? Is there a way to utilize the VIN number to find out?

Thanks

It has a tooth style setup. I assume you replaced the guide rail set when you were in there?

In my post, I mistakenly referred to the tensioners that I replaced as internal tensioners. Actually, I think I should have correctly called them external tensioners, in that they can be replaced from the exterior of the engine without breaking open the crankcase.

I did replace the exterior tensioners. But, I did not open the crankcase which would be necessary in order to replace the chain ramps.

The chain tensioners , to which you are referring, are accessed from the exterior of the engine. The camshaft chain tensioner pads are accessed by removing the cam covers (special tools required) but not opening the crankcase.
Have you run a scanner (Durametric or ...) to verify cam deviation, etc?
