Camshaft tool P253

Okay, next in line is the camshaft locking tool P253
Is this $235 tool necessary to set the cam timing?

Pretty much, unless you plan to fabricate your own.

Which doesn't look difficult. I easily fabricated the camshaft hold-down tool. Here I see a piece of flat bar with a disk which mates with the slot in the camshaft to lock it parallel to the seam. Is it exactly parallel? If so, I could construct this in an hour or so. Might not be quite as pretty. Thanks for your input! :-)
BTW is there a functional difference between this tool and the 9612 tool with the lovely red knobs?

The 9612 tool is designed for when you need to hold the cams while removing one of the cam drive sprockets that the chain goes around.

Davedeck, I'm in Montreal. I may be interested in this (it's the P253?). Depends on the shipping cost etc.

Yes it is the Pelican P253. Send me a PM with your address and I'll check shipping. It's on EBay if you want to see a pic of it.

PM sent. Couldn't locate the e-bay listing. -J
