size of the 'tripple square socket..?
required to remove the single weird bolt between the engine and gearbox..
I went to Sears and they told me that the 'triple square' sockets have to be special ordered, thanks in advance. Regards, Gilles . |
I got mine from Advance Auto. It came in a set of 4 triple square bits; the set was under $10.

TOL-KD2305 10mm Triple Square Socket $8.72
Click the link and its at the bottom of the page if you want to get it from Pelican. http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/ksearch/PEL_search.cgi?command=show_part_page&please_wait= N&make=POR&model=986M§ion=TOLtol&page=4&bookma rk=&part_number=TOL-KD2305]Porsche Boxster Tools - Page 4 |
Someone once mentioned that a 12pt 10mm socket will also work. I have not tried it but if your tool box is nearby, give it a test.
Edit: I just looked at the Pelican tool and it doesn't look similar to me at all. |

Hate to be pedantic, but "socket" implies female. These tools are drivers. There are internal and external TORX fasteners, but this isn't the case with triple square/XZN, mostly due to semantics. There are 12-point head fasteners on, for example, BMW motorcycles, but the wrenches aren't called, for example outside XZN, just as hex-head fasteners aren't called outside Allen. Nobody calls an Allen driver a "socket." The Pelican page makes the error, too.

Buy real tools ($8.50 from Snap on):

if you order from pelican, beware the porsche tax. the 5-speed is actually an audi transmission and requires the same tool. if you buy the tool from the porsche side of the pelican website - $32. if you buy the tool fro the audi/vw side of the pelican website - $8. the porsche tool is of course 'high performance'; it reduces the weight of your wallet by a few ounces.

I bought mine in a set at Lowes. Not the best tools ever but has worked for years many times.
