ims bearing puller alternative?
Hi guys, i was wondering if there was an alternative to pulling the ims bearing out other than with the specific puller. If im to change my ims bearing, since my mechanic doesn't have a puller, would i need to buy the puller as well, or is there anybwsy i cam do without it?

you will need the specific tool kit.
both for removing the old bearing, and installing the new one. i think that flat6 is coming out with a new tool that removes and install the bearing in a better way Faultless IMS Tool but the old kit will do the job as well. try to look for a used one on one of the forums (911 forums as rennlist.com is good as well). i have a tool kit that i lend to people here on the forum, but shipping it back and forth to malta will not make an economical sense to you. |

The tools are what allows the retrofit to be possible. If you have a single row IMSB you might get it out with some improvised puller. If its a dual row, you most certainly will not. Until I invented the current tools the dual row bearing wasn't being extracted because other pullers were not up to the job and would either break, or blow a hole through the case. Its imperative that the bearing be extracted via a means that exerts force on the IMS and not on the crankcase, or shares the load between the case and the IMS, like my most recent development, The Faultless tool.
If the person doing this job doesn't have the proper tools, my feelings are the same as JFP. |
I used the LNE tools last week and my dual row bearing came out/went in without much drama. The car is running perfectly. Get the puller, have the mechanic use it, then sell the tool. I bet your net outlay on the tool is only about $50.
